Deneese Hamilton, founder and managing director of Perfect Hair and Skin Products, said that Jamaica has too many natural products for persons not to be successful, should they enter the market to produce hair-and-skin-care commodities.

The boss of the soon-to-be-five-year-old company said that the industry has huge potential, pointing to the 12 hair and skin products she makes, which, she said, are doing extremely well in pharmacies, supermarkets, and other retail stores all over Jamaica.

“The ordinary persons can afford these products and that’s the good thing about it. Despite the fact that the packaging can become very costly and challenging, I am able to keep prices down because we utilise our own Jamaican things. Our avocado is fabulous, not just for eating, but it’s great to wash the hair with, and so we have our avocado shampoo,” she said.

“Our own Jamaican castor oil is just great. We support our farmers. We use our own rosemary. I have my lady downtown who I get my own rosemary from. Aloe Vera is another product, everybody knows they are to give the aloe vera to me. The neem is also a great ingredient for hair growth. We have everything here, there is no need to depend on overseas,” she continued.

Hamilton added, “I think we still have the mentality that anything that comes from overseas is good, which is unfortunate, because the overseas persons are looking to us. (For) our coconut carrot oil, we just buy the carrot at the market, have it processed, and you get all the benefits from the carrot. Again, right here in Jamaica.”

She said that as she looks forward to greater accomplishments in the future, catering to children will be high on her agenda.

“In the next five years, we will be adding more products to the line, for example, products that can help to do the twisting or the curls,” she told The Gleaner.

“Parents want things for their children and they want the best. When you go to the expos, the mothers keep saying that they need something for their daughters and you really want to start them well. I can’t leave out my children. I emphasise, again, that the raw products are here.”
