Scholarships offered by the Ministry of Education (MOE)

The following are Scholarships/Awards that will be administered by the Tertiary Unit of the Ministry of Education for the 2013/14 academic year. The Awards are offered to Teachers/Students desirous of pursuing higher education. The types of scholarships being offered are listed below:

Jamaica Government Exhibition Scholarship

 

The Jamaica Flour Mills Scholarship

 

Applications are invited for Scholarships to be offered by the JAMAICA FLOUR MILLS FOUNDATION to pursue full-time study at University of the West Indies (U.W.I.), University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) and Northern Caribbean University (N.C.U.).

 

Eligibility:

Undergraduate

 

Six (6) or more CSEC General Proficiency subjects at Grades I or II, including English Language and Mathematics.

 

Three (3) 2-Unit CAPE subjects at Grades I or II or Three (3) ‘A’ Level GCE subjects with at least a B average.

 

Graduate

 A GPA of no less than 3.0 in examinations.

 

Candidates must be

17 - 35 years of age

Jamaican citizens

 

Selection:

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, demonstrable leadership qualities and participation in school and community activities.

 

Obligations:

Successful candidates will be required to work in Jamaica for two (2) years for each year of the Scholarship upon completion of the course of study.

 

Exclusion:

Children and/or dependents of persons employed at Jamaica Flour Mills are not eligible for these scholarships.

University of the West Indies (UWI) Scholarships and Bursaries

Academic Year (2013/2014)

The following are general guidelines regarding scholarships and bursaries available for the academic year 2012/2013 at the UWI:

The deadline to apply for all awards (unless otherwise stated) is MAY 31, 2013.

Eligibility:

·         A Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (B average) is expected. Some awards may require a higher GPA.

  • The awards are available to full-time undergraduate students of the University of the West Indies (unless otherwise stipulated).
  • The required status as indicated on each term of award is as at the academic year 2013/2014. For example, if the criteria states "must be in level II", the applicant is expected to be enrolled in level II in the 2013/2014 academic year.
  • You must complete (LEGIBLY), one application form. Please list the awards for which you wish to be considered in order of preference.
  • The completed application form should be submitted to the Office of Student Financing, UWI Mona Campus.

How to apply:

Application for financial assistance and scholarships and bursaries begins with the completion of the application form

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Obtain the application form
  2. Complete pages 1 to 5 and page 7
  3. Have your referee complete page 6
  4. Submit completed form to the Office of Student Financing.

NOTE: Incomplete application forms will NOT be processed.

General information:

·         The application form must be completed regardless of the type of assistance in which the student is interested in.

·         In the case of short term loans, the applicant should be explicit that they are expecting monies.

·         For all the other programmes of assistance, the application will be considered by the Financial Assistance Committee who will, based on the information provided by the student, determine which programme of assistance will be offered.

It is important to note that interested persons wishing to pursue studies at the Master’s level in Project Management, Construction & Maintenance of High Voltage Electrical Infrastructure, Master in Electrical Generation, Road Construction, Facility Management and other similar areas are invited to apply for scholarships for participation. Courses will be conducted on line and will be taught in SPANISH.

Commonwealth Scholarships tenable in Cameroon, Kenya, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania and the University of the South Pacific.

The 2013 Commonwealth Scholarships are for Graduate study of up to two years' duration, commencing in 2013-2014. Each award covers:

·         full tuition

·         living stipend set at local rates

·         arrival allowance of USD 500

·         one economy class return airfare between the home country of the student and the intended place of study

Applications should be submitted to national nominating agencies in the first instance. Successful candidates will be required to complete an application form for the proposed university of study in addition to their scholarship application.
